Craving a dark romance with a whole lot of angst? Then buckle up, because Rina Kent's Ruthless Empire is a rollercoaster ride of emotions.

Let me tell you about Silver Sterling, the epitome of popularity at St. Jude's Academy. Her life seems perfect, but behind the facade lies a darkness she desperately tries to hide. Then there's Cole Nash, the brooding bad boy with a dangerous edge. Their paths have crossed before, leaving a trail of unspoken tension and a childhood pact that promised them each other's "firsts."

The story kicks off with a scene that sent shivers down my spine:

"Remember, Silver? We pinky promised. Your first everything. Mine too." His voice was a low rumble, sending tremors through the air itself.

Cole's intensity is both terrifying and strangely captivating. He becomes an ever-present shadow in Silver's life, pushing boundaries and toying with her emotions. Their dynamic is a delicious mix of hate and undeniable attraction.

Kent masterfully builds the tension. One minute they're trading barbs, the next they're locked in a heated argument so raw it crackles with unspoken desire. A particularly steamy library scene had me clutching my e-reader, heart pounding in my chest.

But Ruthless Empire isn't just about the passionate encounters. There's a darker thread woven into the narrative, a mystery surrounding a stalker that keeps you guessing. The plot takes some unexpected twists, and let me warn you, Kent doesn't shy away from violence.

Here's where I have to admit, some parts were a bit difficult to stomach. There's a possessiveness to Cole that borders on obsessive, and some of his actions are downright toxic. But that's the beauty (and danger) of dark romance. It walks a fine line, blurring the definition of what's acceptable.

By the end, I was left breathless. The resolution isn't exactly sunshine and rainbows, but it stays true to the characters and the overall tone of the novel.

If you're looking for a light and fluffy read, this isn't it. But if you crave a dark and intense romance that will stay with you long after you turn the last page, then Ruthless Empire is a must-read. Just be prepared for a wild ride.
